Cimitero monumentale di Milano/Monumental Cemetery of Milan

What could be better on Halloween than to talk about cemeteries?
For Christmas (yes, that's some time in advance), a friend of mine bought me a guided tour among the liberty graves of the Monumental Cemetery of Milan by  Waamtours, an agency specializing in guided tours of Milan with a quirk.
The tours costed 10€ for each person and, although it was supposed to last an hour it lasted 2:30 hours, so a very good time for money, with a high quality of the visit. In short, highly recommended.
The Monumental Cemetery in Milan was built between 1864 and 1866 (with a number of later additions), by the architect Carlo Maciachini, with an eclectic style that mixes Byzantine, Gothic and Romanesque.
The main building, just opposite the entrance, is the memorial chapel, made of marble and brick, in which are buried the people who contributed most to the fame and prosperity of the city, such as Alessandro Manzoni and Carlo Cattaneo. In addition to the people actually buried within it, other are represented there, with busts or just the engraved name (many female names were only added very late).
In the underground crypt we saw Dario Fo's recent grave.
The memorial chapel performs this function only from 1870, as it was built to be a church.

The cemetery at the time had been built with a very open mind because it also included a part for non-Christians and one for Jews. Of these we only visited the Jewish cemetery, opened in 1872 to replace the cemeteries of Porta Tenaglia, Porta Magenta and Porta Vercellina.
It lies to the East of the Catholic cemetery with a separate entrance.
The central ossuary has stained glass windows by Diego Pennacchio Ardemagni, added in 2015, depicting the 12 tribes of Israel. In addition to the bodies put there after the expiration of concessions, it houses those thaken from the cemeteries of Mojazza and San Gregorio, that are now closed.

We then passed to the central part, the Christian one, focusing on the liberty graves and the first fascist style.

The tomb of the Campari family, famous for inventing homonyms aperitifs, was remarkable. It consists of a Last Supper by the sculptor Giannino Castiglioni, whose main features are hair divided in locks and big hands, with life-size statues in groups of 3 around Jesus. Near the foot of Judas there is a bag with the famous 30 coins.

Another interesting tomb, which is situated directly behind the ossuary, is that of Antonio Bernocchi (who worked textile industry and financed, between other things, Milan's Triennale and the reconstruction of the bombed Scala) created by Castiglioni too. It is a truncated hollow cone representing the Via Crucis. The statues are carved all-round so from the inside their back is visible. The first square houses the statue of Judah, who has the face of a sculptor who was a competitor of Castiglioni. For the other statues, the sculptor used as models workers who built the tomb.
I found very interesting also the tombs inspired by ancient Egypt.

The tomb sculpture that I probably liked most was "The dream of death"
made by Enrico Butti in 1890 for the Casati family. It depicts the death of Isabella Airoldi, who died in childbirth in 1889, when she was just 24 years old. Isabella is depicted in the act of dying, in an idealized version, beautiful as if asleep (her bare breasts at the time caused a sensation). Behind her we can see a round bas-relief depicting her entry in the afterlife.

The Monumental Cemetery is considered an open air museum, so, even if we did not see all the graves (we would have to spend at least a full day there), if I told you only about all those we saw we  would never end. I conclude this post with this beautiful ancient ultra-luxury electric hearse and the cemetery cat.
