"Morire per vivere" (in originale "Old Man's War", una delle poche volte in cui il titolo italiano è più figo) è il romanzo di debutto dello scrittore statunitense John Scalzi, pubblicato nel 2005.
Ha vari seguiti, "Le brigate fantasma" (The Ghost Brigades) del 2006, "L'ultima colonia" (The Last Colony) del 2007 e "Zoe's Tale" del 2008. La serie comprende anche "The Human Division", pubblicato a puntate e raccolto in un romanzo nel 2013, e "The End of All Things", un libro composto da quattro racconti brevi, pubblicato nel 2015.
I primi tre libri sono stati pubblicati in italiano dalla Gargoyle.
Il protagonista è John Perry, un anziano statunitense. A 75 anni tutti i terrestri del primo mondo possono scegliere di arruolarsi nell'esercito dell'Unione Coloniale, un'organizzazione che controlla la colonizzazione umana dello spazio. Perry, come gli altri terrestri, sa molto poco della CU, ma decide di arruolarsi lo stesso perché corre voce che ai nuovi soldati venga in qualche modo restituita la giovinezza.
L'universo di "Morire per vivere" è estremamente tecnologico e popolato da molte razze senzienti.
La narrazione è in prima persona e il punto di vista di Perry è decisamente simpatico ed ironico e aiuta a digerire anche lunghi spiegoni non proprio immersivi. In più scoprire il mondo della colonizzazione umana insieme al protagonista permette una serie di sorprese e colpi di scena.
L'ho divorato e una volta finito ho deciso che ne volevo ancora e ho iniziato il secondo romanzo.
Se siete dei fan delle space opera, dell'hard science fiction e/o della fantascienza militare, dovete assolutamente recuperarlo.

The series also includes "The Human Division," published as episodes and collected into a novel in 2013, and "the End of All Things," a book made up of four short stories, published in 2015.
The protagonist is John Perry, a senior US citizen. At 75 years of age, all the people of the first world can choose to enlist in the army of the Colonial Defense Forces, an organization that leads human colonization of space. Perry, like all the other common people on Heart, knows very little of the CDF, but decides to enlist antway because there are rumors that the new soldiers somehow regain their youth.
"Old Man's War"'s universe is extremely technological and populated by many sentient races.
The narration is in first person and the Perry point of view is very nice and ironic and helps to digest even long and not really immersive explanations. Moreover, to discover the world of human colonization with the protagonist allows a series of surprises and twists.
I devoured it and once finished I decided that I wanted more and started the second novel.
If you're a fan of space opera, hard science fiction and/or military science fiction, you should definitely read it.
