Quando c'era Marnie/When Marnie Was There

"When Marnie was there" (思い出のマーニー) is a 2014 Japanese animated film produced by Studio Ghibli and directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, based on Joan G. Robinson's novel of the same name.
It was the last film of the Studio before the announcement of a temporary closure, due to Hayao Miyazaki's withdrawal a year earlier.
Anna is a 12 year old Sapporo girl, who is shy and loves art. Growing up she has become very introverted, probably elaborating the fact that she has been adopted. Since she suffers from asthma, she is sent to a couple of relatives living in East Hokkaido to breathe sea air.
Exploring the uninhabited villa on the other side of the swamp, Anna meets Marnie, a foreign girl.
Thus begins a friendship set in a space between dream and reality.
Who is really Marnie and what is her relationship with Anna?
"When Marnie was there" is a dreamy, sometimes emotionally intense but delicate novel of formation.
As always, the animations are amazing.
It's definitely a work well done, but it lacks the magic of the best Ghibli Studio films.

-inoltre ho capito tutto subito-

I never actually saw this movie...I read and loved the book (to which the movie seems to bear little resemblance), though! Studio Ghibli doesn't really seem at its best when adapting books, especially non-Japanese ones - Arrietty and Earthsea both sucked, in my honest opinion :S

@Edelberry: in the cases of Arrietty and Marnie I didn't read the book but I agree that the films are nothing special. Somehow I liked the film adaptation of Earthsea even if I read the book, but I think it was because the book is so much sadder.
But I really loved Howl that is an adaptation of a british book! Regarding the plot, the book was clearer and more complete, in particular in the end, but Howl is one of my favourite Ghibli films anyway.

@Chiara: non ispirava molto nemmeno a me.
