My Hairy Half and I were invited to Tuscany by a couple of friends, planning to go see the famous Carnival of Viareggio.
We left on Friday night and slept at their house in Pietrasanta. On Saturday morning we went downtown and had breakfast at the bakery La Margherita with cappuccino and a delicious pastry.

After it, our native friend showed us the city.

I discovered that Pietrasanta is a town with an unique artistic presence, due to the practice of providing the precious local marble to artists for free as long as they left their works in the city.
In the church of S. Anthonio Abate we saw two 1993 murals by Botero depicting paradise and hell.

In the main square, we saw from the outside the Cathedral of San Martino (XIII-XIV century) in Romanesque-Gothic style, the adjoining tower and the old town hall.
In front of the Cathedtal there was the sculpture of a giant chili pepper. The effect was alienating, but very nice.

Probably it was connected to the exhibition that held in the deconsecrated church of Sant'Agostino, of the XIV century), transformed into a modern art museum, to which we were only able to give a quick glance.

In return we went to the food market, held every Saturday morning in Francesco Crispi Square. There were many interesting things, we bought Cinta Senese (a particular italian pig type) sausage that we ate for lunch with turnip tops and two cool  La Fabbrica del Miele products. "Il buon inverno" (The good winter) boosts the immune system in a completely natural way. The herbal tea with thyme instead dissolves in hot water and works against coughs, sore throats and colds.

Near the station we met a very funny piece of street art.

In the afternoon we went to the beach of Forte dei Marmi.
I missed the sea so much!
(I would also point out that my new camera is super cool)

In the evening we dressed up to go to the carnival. We chose costumes that worked both individually and as a group: amoeba, dinosaur, cave woman (I) and astronaut, or Evolution. Unfortunately I could not get decent photos of the costumes or the carnival (given the danger of muggings I did not bring my new camera).
In Viareggio we ate at the pizzeria Il Pasha, that wasn't particularly good (though not bad either) nor particularly economic and hadn't a perfect service too (the waiter spilled a glass of water on me. But I have to admit that my tablemates were particularly frantic and the waiter never lost his composure).
After dinner we went to the dock, where, among confetti and flags, the masked people gathered to dance. There were songs of all kinds, from anime songs to partisan ones, and, after an initial embarrassment, we had a lot of fun. There was an atmosphere of euphoria, stimulated by alcohol and other types of aids (a shady guy tried to sell me a kilo of "porcini").
At about two o'clock in the morning the organizers turned off the music and the crowd thinned.

The next day we woke up late and we calmly had a wonderful breakfast in the garden.

After a gargantuan lunch, we returned to Viareggio to see the floats parade. Since the entry ticket to the roads where the parade passed costed no less than 18€ and that we would be able to stay little, we decided to see it from behind the gates that barred the area.
The floats were huge and beautiful, with many moving parts. They often seemed to parody hot political issues, in fact, there was also the Trump float. I particularly liked the one with the armoured polar bears of "The Golden Compass" (who knows if its teme was the melting of the poles?).

We left for Milan under the colors of the wonderful sunset that made Viareggio, which had never particularly appealed to me, really beautiful.
